Background: Flow state is a subjective experience that people report when task performance experienced as automatic, intrinsically rewarding, optimal and effortless. While this intriguing phenomenon the subject of plethora behavioural studies, only recently researchers have started to look at its neural correlates. Here, we aim systematically critically review existing literature on correlates flow state.Methods: Three electronic databases (Web Science, Scopus PsycINFO) were searched acquire information eligible articles in July, 2021, updated March, 2022. Studies measured or manipulated (through questionnaires employing experimental paradigms) recorded associated brain activity with electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) selected. We used Cochrane Collaboration Risk Bias 2 (RoB 2) tool assess methodological quality records. Measuring flow, an optimal mental state defined by intense focus and immersion, can provide valuable insights into research on human engagement. However, a review of 69 studies identified significant methodological issues that could be undermining progress in this area research. We discovered the use eight nonvalidated psychological flow verification instruments (used 33 studies), ambiguity lack transparency interpretation reporting results (36 screening participants with only two for disposition to experience state.
