We shed light on wicked problems in the German energy transition. Abstract Several European countries plan to phase out coal-fired power plants in order reach their greenhouse gas abatement targets. Additionally, the phase-out will bring about so-called ancillary effects or co-effects. In our study, we focus on co-effects induced that export coal Europe. Furthermore, examine imposed China as a major supplier of technologies (like solar energy technologies) replace plants. Using combination an input-output model, econometric analysis and employing concept United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, assess impacts policies environmental, economic, societal dimensions. Our results show despite negative income employment coal-exporting countries, is linked with multiple positive effects. particular, observe improvements water management biodiversity conservation, reduced release pollutants, level. However, even if consider reduction use steel production sector additional challenge, these exporting remain rather small. The same applies for China.
