From expanding financial services to tackling poverty in West African Economic and Monetary Union: The accelerating role of mobile money

Abstract This paper aims to assess the accelerating role of digital technology in fighting poverty through financial inclusion countries West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). Based on a sample adult population from World Bank's Findex database, we estimate recursive bivariate probit model that addresses endogeneity. The findings show regular usage mobile money as well purpose including saving, borrowing, remittance their combinations increase diversely significantly probability short‐term alleviation WAEMU. In addition, change status can be indirectly due certain driving factors mainly ownership phones.
