The endoparasitic rhizocephalan Parasacculina sinensis has a radically simplified morphology and primarily infests decapods crustaceans. Rhizocephalan barnacles usually absorb nutrients from the host through complex rootlet system (the interna), also change morphology, physiology behavior of their hosts. However, little is known about transcriptomic landscape, ultrastructural details gene expression interna rootlets in group. In this study, we investigated structural molecular signatures P. by using detailed histological staining analyses. interconnected F-actin nodal network, lipid droplets, nucleus were visualized fluorescence straining. We successfully obtained clean transcriptome conducted functional analyses embedded within hepatopancreas, claw muscle, eyestalk. ontology (GO) terms related to translation, metabolic process, biosynthetic cellular process highly expressed top 10% transcripts interna. GO category shared differential genes (DEGs) among internae was embryonic development. Kyoto Encyclopedia Genes Genomes (KEGG) pathway neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction term neurotransmitter transporter activity identified DEGs internae. entangled eyestalk muscle fibers had similarities differences biology. Additionally, specific candidate probably involved immune, metabolism, molting growth identified. Our study demonstrates an in-depth function reveals potential mechanisms parasite control. This provides novel information further investigate evolutionary drivers parasitism barnacles.

Traditionally, dominant breeders have been considered to be able control the reproduction of other individuals in multimember groups that high variance reproductive success/reproductive skew (e.g., forced sterility/coercion conspecifics eusocial animals; sex-change suppression sequential hermaphrodites). These actions are typically presented as active impositions by reproductively individuals. However, how can regulate physiology others? Alternatively, all contestants make decisions, and less successful self-downregulate presence breeders. Shifting perspective from a top-down manipulation broader view, which includes contenders, using multitaxon approach, we propose unifying framework for resolution conflicts based on signalling rather than control, along continuum levels strategic regulation reproduction.

Understanding how animals evolve to become parasites is key unravelling biodiversity generated as a whole, could account for half of all species richness. Two significant impediments this are that fossilize poorly and they retain few clear shared morphological features with non-parasitic relatives. Barnacles include some the most astonishingly adapted adult body reduced just network tubes plus an external reproductive body, but originated from sessile, filter-feeding form still mystery. Here, we present compelling molecular evidence exceedingly rare scale-worm parasite barnacle Rhizolepas positioned within clade comprising currently assigned Octolasmis , genus exclusively commensal at least six different phyla animals. Our results imply in genus-level represent array various transitional stages free-living parasitic terms plate reduction host-parasite intimacy. Diverging only about 19.15 million years ago, route parasitism was associated rapid modifications anatomy, pattern likely true many other lineages.
