ABSTRACT Bacteria carry many types of obligate intracellular parasites, including plasmids and bacteriophage. During infection, these parasites redirect resources away from bacterial processes toward parasite production. Because parasite-induced metabolic changes influence host traits such as growth rate, nutrient uptake, waste excretion, parasitic infection should alter how microbes contribute to important community ecosystem functions. Yet there are few empirical tests shapes metabolically-mediated interactions between non-host species. Here, we integrated a genome-scale modeling approach with an in vitro cross-feeding system investigate the consequences two Escherichia coli : conjugative plasmid F128 filamentous phage M13. We examined impact on bacteria multispecies composed E. , Salmonella enterica, Methylobacterium extorquens . Modeling predicted that have for rate secretion reuptake carbon byproducts. These theoretical results aligned broadly experiments, where found changed excretion profile inducing net externalization lactate. also parasite-driven metabolism increased density species composition were generalizable across some genotypes. Our work emphasizes infected by different metabolisms than uninfected cells demonstrates shifts can significant microbial structure function. IMPORTANCE The shape function communities variety ways, killing their hosts or transferring genetic material. This study uses combination flux balance analysis consisting enterica M13, change contributions via remodeling. Flux suggests demand processes, leading identities concentrations compounds externalize into environment. finding is supported experimental results, which additionally show induce production findings extend our understanding bacteriophage communities.

Most deep-ocean life relies on organic carbon from the surface ocean. While settling primary production rapidly attenuates in water column, pulses of material can be quickly transported to depth form food falls. One example fresh that reach great depths across tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea is pelagic macroalgae Sargassum . However, little known about organisms able use this source. Here, we encountered isopod Bathyopsurus nybelini at 5002–6288 m Puerto Rico Trench Mid-Cayman Spreading Center using Deep Submergence Vehicle Alvin In most 32 observations, isopods carried fronds Through an integrative suite morphological, DNA sequencing, microbiological approaches, show species adapted feed by a specialized swimming stroke, having serrated grinding mouthparts, containing gut microbiome provides dietary contribution through degradation macroalgal polysaccharides fixing nitrogen. Microbial metabolic capabilities and interactions shape their niche hypervolume that in turn governs ecological strategies ecosystem services. In the context of functional redundancy or equivalence, focus has been on guilds order to bypass complex challenge faced by theory for disentangling hypervolume. However, some cases this simplification at expense ignoring role individual genotype each microbe within a guild fails explain how diversity is maintained. study, we inspect profile metagenome-assembled genomes along pronounced redox gradient water column an anchialine cave. Bridging neutral biodiversity biogeography theory, our analysis uses focal while also incorporating individuality looking into background further includes spatial distribution microbes delineate space. Our results emphasize differences are critical furnishing carrying same capability refute equivalence with enables partitioning among them.

During the trophic period of myxomycetes, plasmodia myxomycetes can perform crawling feeding and phagocytosis bacteria, fungi, organic matter. Culture-based studies have suggested that are associated with one or several species bacteria; however, by amplicon sequencing, it was shown up to 31-52 bacteria could be detected in myxomycete, suggesting bacterial diversity likely underestimated. To fill this gap characterize myxomycetes' microbiota functional traits, characteristics six were investigated metagenomic sequencing. The results indicate harbored diverse microbial communities, including eukaryotes, viruses, archaea, dominant bacteria. microbiomes represented more than 22.27% genome, these microbes may not merely parasitic present as food but rather play roles within plasmodium. contained similar community compositions each myxomycete species-specific. Functional analysis revealed a highly conserved profile across plasmodia, they serve specific function for myxomycetes. While host-specific selection shape redundancy ensures stability different
