The hippocampus possesses anatomical differences along its long axis. Here the functional specialization of human hippocampal axis was explored using network-anchored precision MRI (N = 11) paired with behavioral analyses (N=266). Functional connectivity demonstrated that anterior preferentially correlated a cerebral network associated remembering, while posterior distinct salience. Seed regions placed within recapitulated networks. characterization task data same intensively sampled individuals discovered double dissociation between and regions. region sensitive to remembering imagining future, specifically tracking process scene construction, displayed transient responses targets in an oddball detection transitions blocks. These findings suggest differential reflecting properties partner

Abstract Generalization to new tasks requires learning of task representations that accurately reflect the similarity structure space. Here, we argue episodic memory (EM) plays an essential role in this process by stabilizing representations, thereby supporting accumulation structured knowledge. We demonstrate using a neural network model infers minimize current task’s objective function; crucially, can retrieve previously encoded from EM and use these initialize inference process. With EM, succeeds underlying structure; without drift fails learn structure. further show errors support promoting activation similar with sensory inputs. Overall, provides novel account how supports acquisition representations.

Abstract We experience the present as a continuous stream of information, but often past in parcels unique events or episodes. Decades research have helped to articulate how we perform this event segmentation moment, well and their boundaries influence what later remember. Here, review explore relationship between processing recall with perspective it can be uniquely characterized by contributions interactions rest brain. Recollection of real-world events is often accompanied by a sense being in the place where event transpired. Convergent evidence suggests hippocampus plays key role supporting episodic memory associating information with time and it was originally encountered. This representation reinstated during retrieval. However, little known about roles different subfields human this process. Research humans non-human animal models has suggested that spatial environmental boundaries have powerful influence on memory, as well hippocampal representations contexts events. Here, we used high-resolution fMRI to investigate how activity patterns recollection objects encountered contexts. During encoding phase, participants viewed once naturalistic virtual reality task which they passively explored two rooms one houses. Following were scanned while recollected items absence any contextual information. Our behavioral results demonstrated context enhanced for near boundary. Activity CA1 carried associated each these boundary items. Exploratory analyses revealed performance correlated fidelity retrieved anterior parahippocampal cortex subiculum. highlight privileged suggest more generally close relationship between region.

Schemas can facilitate memory consolidation. Studies have suggested that interactions between the hippocampus and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) are important for schema-related However, in humans, how schema accelerates consolidation of new information relates to durable remains unclear. To address these knowledge gaps, we used a human analogue rodent spatial task resting-state fMRI investigate post-encoding brain networks predict long-term performance different conditions. After participants were trained obtain schema-consistent or schema-inconsistent object-location associations, they learned associations. The associations tested after rest scanner 24 h later outside scanner. Bayesian multilevel modelling was applied analyse networks. results showed during post-encoding, stronger vmPFC- anterior hippocampal connectivity associated with condition, whereas object-selective lateral occipital (LOC)-ventromedial weaker inside default mode network inconsistent condition. In addition, LOC-anterior both These shed light on schemas reconfigure early networks, especially prefrontal-hippocampal stimuli-relevant cortical influence performance.
