Abstract The present study seeks to shed further light on what favors the conversion of inventions into innovations in for‐profit firms and advance our understanding how tackle cancer grand challenges (CGCs). Specifically, following literature knowledge search recombination, we analyze whether cancer‐related developed through an intense adoption scientific (scientific intensity) result (i) a higher number approved drugs (ii) shorter approval time for new drugs. Notably, while role science with regard technological development has been widely studied, extent which science‐based solutions relate product introduction, especially terms coping such as drugs, is less known. Furthermore, considering digitization (health) R&D information communication technologies (i.e., digital technologies) address challenges, examine (digital directly affect speed drug approval, well interaction effects between intensity exist. We develop hypotheses that test sample 65,861 patents owned by 139 firms, collected from USPTO Cancer Moonshot Patent Data. These have priority date 1990 2010, led 1035 Results reveal not associated different single invention but at leads newly drug. Digital appears it lessens intensity, thus pointing limit innovation processes.
