If I Enjoy, I Continue: The Mediating Effects of Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Enjoyment in Continuance of Asynchronous Online English Learning

Although
possessing
flexibility
and
accessibility,
asynchronous
online
courses
suffer
from
high
attrition
cause
unsatisfactory
learning
performance,
leading
to
a
pressing
need
understand
factors
influencing
learners’
continuance
of
intention.
Based
on
the
expectation
confirmation
model,
this
study
investigated
perceived
enjoyment
as
an
extended
variable
unpack
mediating
effects
usefulness
relationship
between

learners
enrolled
in
English
were
obtained

analysis.
Results

that

ABSTRACT
As
generative
artificial
intelligence
(GenAI)
increasingly
penetrates
language
education,
understanding
learners'
continued
intention
to
use
this
technology
becomes
crucial.
This
study
examines
EFL
continuance
GenAI
for
learning
through
PLS‐SEM
and
fsQCA
methodologies.
Participants
were
undergraduate
learners
(
N
=
383)
from
three
universities
in
Taiwan,
aged
18–24,
with
varying
English
proficiency
levels
(TOEIC
450–860
or
CEFR
A2‐B2).
Data
collected
an
online
survey
comprising
validated
scales
measuring
acceptance
constructs
personality
traits
using
5‐point
Likert
scales.
Analysis

Generative
Artificial
Intelligence
(GAI)
holds
significant
potential
to
enhance
pre-service
teacher
professional
development.
However,
research
has
primarily
focused
on
initial
acceptance,
neglecting
post-acceptance
behaviours,
particularly
the
factors
influencing
continued
GAI
use
among
teachers.
To
address
this
gap,
study
extends
an
Expectation-Confirmation
Model
(ECM)

information
quality
and
AI
self-efficacy
as
additional
determinants.
Using
partial
least
squares
structural
equation
modelling
(PLS-SEM)
approach,
we
analysed
data
from
506
Chinese

reveal
that
positively
impacts
perceived
usefulness
