Microplastics
are
a
global
concern
in
aquatic
ecology
and
readily
colonized
by
bacteria
the
environment.
There
is
lack
of
information
on
bacterial
colonization
eroded
un-eroded
microplastics
freshwater.
In
this
study,
six
types
were
incubated
for
8
weeks
microcosms
with
water
from
Lake
Erie.
Microcosms
inoculated
one
three
species:
Acinetobacter
(A.)
calcoaceticus,
Burkholderia
(B.)
cepacia,
Escherichia
(E.)
coli.
These
species
ubiquitous
bodies
associated
human
populations.
Bacterial
surface
coverage
was
determined
using
electron
fluorescent
microscopy.
Quantifications
EPS
roughness
performed
confocal
microscopy
measuring
contact
angles
(θw
)
droplets
microplastics,
respectively.
Analyses
revealed
differed
among
plastic
after
weeks.
As
study
progressed,
E.
coli
remained
most
abundant
while
A.
calcoaceticus
gradually
decreased
surfaces.
polypropylene
disks
had
lower
abundance.
Conversely,
highest
abundance,
indicating
importance
(lower
θw
values)
physicochemical
properties
colonization.
Our
results
demonstrated
that
affected
both
physiological
colonizing
bacteria.
