Introduction University students are at high risk for anxiety and depression. Our main objective was to tease apart variance in symptom severity that uniquely attributable four associated variables frequently confounded: exposure childhood emotional abuse, alexithymia, sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), (AS). Methods ( N = 410) completed an online survey designed measure our key study along with several other potentially relevant including sex, physical activity levels, perceived COVID-19 impacts. Results Over half of the participants reported moderate extremely severe symptoms Females stronger signs SPS AS were more likely than males have increased their moderate/vigorous exercise since pandemic began. After controlling variables, best predictors impacts SPS, current levels activity. Whereas all three personality abuse emerged as significant both depression anxiety, neither nor accounted unique either model. Unexpectedly, male sex additional factor depression, raising possibility experience stressors societal pressures increase Discussion These findings help clarify links between traits implicated awareness self-regulation, mental health. They may important implications development implementation individualized treatments common disorders.
