ABSTRACT The artisanal fishing in the Bay of Bengal has been characterized by complex heterogeneity. A lack comprehensive data on threatened elasmobranchs (sharks and rays), including guitarfish, hinders evidence‐based management. This study evaluated status focusing effects socioeconomic circumstances fishers impacting catch perceived trends. impacts were assessed spatially temporally coastal Bangladesh. Interviews conducted with 150 primary fish landing locations communities. analysis showed a notable decrease various guitarfish species. Catch decreased significantly for Glaucostegus granulatus , sharpnose Rhina ancylostoma bowmouth past decade. was linked to overfishing, illegal/harmful techniques injuries from equipment. Fishing‐related (soak time, gear, depth at vessel length) drivers (income debt levels) found impact levels. Socioeconomic factors complicate situation because these influence fishers' habits, perspectives decision‐making. Guitarfish caught both as target incidentally. Most captures occurred southcentral region Four hotspots catches identified based knowledge. critical habitats Ganges‐Brahmaputra‐Meghna (GBM) delta mouth area are vital highlighting need protect ecosystems using spatial management tools. To tackle issues conservation, local communities holistic strategy combining biological knowledge, specific codesigned initiatives. Although may formal education, there is distinct potential specialized bilateral conservation education programmes empower promote sustainable practices. Conservation measures should focus mixed methods, such community engagement, enhanced efficient technique

Growing human use of the marine environment increases proximity humans to wildlife and thus likely human-wildlife interactions. Such interactions influence perceptions nature promote or undermine conservation. Despite their importance, are rarely considered in ecosystem-based spatial planning (MSP). Ideally, these should be identified management (EBM), which is often purported basis for MSP. We used Marxan software data from a citizen science project documenting location, species, age, sex, activity type identify regions along Israel's coast with high probability encounters between people 2 species guitarfish. geographic distribution various activities undertaken by reporting observers. ran 4 scenarios Marxan. Two had conservation goals 30% 50% guitarfish habitat protection. In third fourth scenarios, we added goal leisure each goal. also conducted gap analysis our Israel Nature Parks Authority's master plan protected areas. found park authority was close meeting but far Different uses were more interact different life stages guitarfish, recreational occurred Identifying areas specific showed addressed decisions. Our addition certain model how enhancing dimensions can lead holistic necessary effective planning.
