Importance

Concussion diagnosis remains clinical, without objective diagnostic tests available for adolescents. Known deficits in visual accommodation and autonomic function after concussion make the pupillary light reflex (PLR) a promising target as an physiological biomarker concussion.

Objective

To determine potential utility of PLR metrics biomarkers

Design, Setting, Participants

Prospective cohort adolescent athletes between ages 12 18 years recruited August 1, 2017, December 31, 2018. The study took place at specialty program private suburban high school included healthy control individuals (n = 134) with sport-related (SRC) 98). Analysis was completed June 30, 2020.

Exposures

Sports-related pupillometry assessments.

Main Outcomes Measures

Pupillary (maximum minimum diameter, peak average constriction/dilation velocity, percentage constriction, time to 75% redilation [T75]).

Results

134 98 were obtained median 12.0 days following injury (interquartile range [IQR], 5.0-18.0 days). Eight 9 significantly greater among Bonferroni correction pupil diameter: 4.83 mm vs 4.01 mm; difference, 0.82; 99.44% CI, 0.53-1.11; 2.96 2.63 0.33; 99.4% 0.18-0.48; constriction: 38.23% 33.66%; 4.57; 2.60-6.55; constriction velocity: 3.08 mm/s 2.50 mm/s; 0.58; 0.36-0.81; 4.88 3.91 0.97; 0.63-1.31; dilation 1.32 1.22 0.10; 0.00-0.20; 1.83 1.64 0.19; 0.07-0.32; T75: 1.81 seconds 1.51 seconds; 0.30; 0.10-0.51). In exploratory analyses, sex-based differences observed, girls exhibiting longer T75 (1.96 1.63 0.02-0.65). Among individuals, diminished (eg, smaller maximum size 3.81 4.22 −0.41; −0.77 0.05) observed exercise.

Conclusions Relevance

These findings suggest that enhancement characterize acute concussion, while exercise produced sizes overall slowing metrics, presumably associated fatigue. Quantifiable measures may serve future physiologic athlete.

Abstract Hyperhidrosis is thought to result from excessive stimulation of sweat glands due increased sympathetic activity; however, data on systemic responses following bilateral thoracic sympathectomy as the definitive treatment have not yet been sufficiently evaluated. This study, designed a prospective cohort investigation, included 24 patients who underwent for palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis at our center in 2023, along with an age-matched control group equal size. In group, pupillometry measurements were performed 1 day before surgery 7th postoperative day, while corresponding intervals. Data analyzed both preoperatively postoperatively compared group. According Disease Severity Scale, all had severe hyperhidrosis. Sympathectomy was T3 level 9 T4 levels 15 patients. The satisfaction rate recorded 95.8%. No statistically significant differences observed between preoperative those However, when comparing within favoring parasympathetic activity noted latency contractions photopic low values ( p = 0.016 0.038, respectively). Our study one pioneering works objectively demonstrate, through quantitative method, that enhances system response ocular region.

Objective: Cortical activity, including cognitive and emotional processes, may influence pupillary function. The exact pathways the site of cortical innervation remain elusive, however. We investigated effects select strokes, i.e. ischemic infarcts affecting insular cortex prefrontal eye field, on Methods: Seventy-four patients with acute stroke, consecutively admitted to our institution from March July 2018, were assessed 24 h after endovascular recanalization therapy (i.e., day 2 stroke), using automated pupillometry. Stroke location volume clinical severity (estimated by Alberta Program Early CT Score National Institute Health Scale) recorded. excluded posterior circulation intracranial pathology other than midline shift computed tomography exceeding 5 millimeters or a history disease. Pupillometry data 25 neurologically normal myocardial infarction acquired for control. Results: Fifty stroke thrombectomy included analysis.
