Abstract We examined the reproductive behavior (courtship and mating) its seasonality in three mobula species, spinetail, bentfin, munk’s devil rays ( Mobula mobular, M. thurstoni , munkiana ) southwestern Gulf of California, Mexico, using boat surveys (with drones in-water observation) (n = 69 survey days), spotter planes 428 flights) citizen science observations 31). whether (1) grounds existed within area for any these (2) followed seasonal patterns (3) if this was similar among species. observed 221 sessions 2017 2021–2022, mobular 10), 3), 208) dispersed along 312 km eastern Baja California Peninsula between 4 m to 6.3 away from coast. Most events 209) occurred La Ventana Ensenada de Muertos area. Courtship mating with following a pattern occurring March August, peak during May. displayed previously undescribed behavior, “courtship vortex”, where 122 individuals were circling clockwise direction five hours groups joining leaving main vortex formation. This study highlights as critical habitat endangered vulnerable mobulid

Abstract Sexual dimorphisms are abundant in natural systems; however, their ecological and evolutionary significance have largely been neglected with respect to Chondrichthyes . A number of reported this ancient clade, yet there remains considerable uncertainty regarding the disparity variation present extant taxa, processes that resulted manifestation. In review, I summarise our current understanding sexual chondrichthyans consider extent which existing studies favour two predominant theories evolution. Throughout, major limitations open questions field, arguing ultimately additional required (both regard phenomenon dimorphism itself, several related fields including genetics) if we wish fully understand Chondrichthyes.

Effective management and conservation of threatened species biodiversity requires knowledge reproductive biology, such as cyclicity, mode, age at maturity. We combined endocrinology in-situ ultrasonography to examine characteristics female Caribbean reef sharks Carcharhinus perezi , a widely distributed, marine predator which remains largely understudied throughout its range. Unique this study was the opportunity conduct longitudinal assessments two individuals, recaptured across multiple seasons during sampling in The Bahamas. Within-individual, paired hormone analyses ultrasounds that were confirmed either pregnant, non-pregnant, or reproductively active, suggest biennial cycle for . This unique assess biology same individuals over time underscore importance repeated elucidating population cyclicity highly mobile wild.
