Hyperthermia and targeting heat shock proteins: innovative approaches for neurodegenerative disorders and Long COVID DOI Creative Commons

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) and Long COVID represent critical growing global health challenges, characterized by complex pathophysiological mechanisms including neuronal deterioration, protein misfolding, persistent neuroinflammation. The emergence of innovative therapeutic approaches, such as whole-body hyperthermia (WBH), offers promising potential to modulate underlying in NDs related conditions like COVID. WBH, particularly fever-range, enhances mitochondrial function, induces heat shock proteins (HSPs), modulates neuroinflammation—benefits that pharmacological treatments often struggle replicate. HSPs HSP70 HSP90 play pivotal roles folding, aggregation prevention, cellular protection, directly targeting pathological processes seen Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's disease. Preliminary findings also suggest WBH's alleviate neurological symptoms COVID, where neuroinflammation serotonin dysregulation are prominent. Despite the absence robust clinical trials, implications WBH extend immune modulation restoration disrupted physiological pathways.
