This present review article considers the rapid development of miniaturized handheld near-infrared spectrometers over last decade and provides an overview current instrumental developments exemplary applications in fields material food control as well environmentally relevant investigations. Care is taken, however, not to fall into exaggerated sometimes unrealistic narrative some direct-to-consumer companies, which has raised expectations with full-bodied promises but harmed very valuable technology NIR spectroscopy, rather than promoting its further development. Special attention will also be paid possible that allow a clientele necessarily scientifically trained solve quality authentication problems this everyday life.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and nitrification, two common biological pathways, are critical for the microbial nitrogen cycle. Short chain alkanes (C2-C8) have been well-known as inhibitors nitrification through interaction with ammonia monooxygenase, while whether these affect anammox is an open question. Here, this work demonstrated significant inhibition of ethane on revealed inhibitory mechanism. The acute was concentration-dependent reversible; 0.86 mM dissolved caused 50% (IC50), 1.72 almost completely inhibited anammox. After long-term exposure to 0.09 30 days, (nitrite) removal rate dropped from 202 (267) mg N L-1 d-1 1 (1) d-1, abundance bacteria decreased 61.9% 9.5%. intercellular concentration after exposure, metatranscriptome analysis showed upregulation genes transport bacteria. Thus, could suppress uptake resulting in activities. As second most prevalent alkane methane various anoxic environments, may important effect cycle driven by that should be investigated future research.
