Direct exposure to household fine particulate air pollution (HAP) associated with inefficient combustion of fuels (wood, charcoal, coal, crop residues, kerosene, etc.) for cooking, space-heating, and lighting is estimated result in 2.3 (1.6–3.1) million premature yearly deaths globally. HAP emitted indoors escapes outdoors a leading source outdoor ambient (AAP) low- middle-income countries, often being larger contributor than well-recognized sources including road transport, industry, coal-fired power plants, brick kilns, construction dust. We review published scientific studies that model the contribution AAP at global major sub-regional scales. describe strengths limitations current state knowledge on HAP's related impact public health provide recommendations improve these estimates. find dominant matter (PM2.5) globally — regardless variations types, configurations, emission inventories used contributes approximately 20 % total PM2.5 exposure. There are large regional variations: South Asia, ∼ 30 PM2.5, while high-income North America fraction 7 %. The median estimate indicates results substantial mortality burden about 0.77(0.54–1) excess deaths, addition from direct Coordinated action required avert this burden.

The disease burden of air pollution (AP) has been well-documented, yet few studies have explored its economic burden. Retrieving data from the Global Burden Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021, this study constructed a cost-of-illness (COI) model to estimate China's AP in 1990 2021 identify national provincial differences, then, an age-period-cohort (APC) was adopted trends 2050. Results demonstrated serious load AP, emphasizing necessity for intervention. Nationwide, witnessed decline compared 1990, while increased during same period. Evidence shown that significant reduction household solid fuels (HAP) attributed adoption clean energy, offering insights into control low- middle-income countries (LMICs). While ambient particulate matter (AMP) emerged as leading cause it is predicted endure, particularly provinces like Heilongjiang, Hebei, Liaoning. Northern inland regions bear higher than southern coastal do. Population aging exacerbates these challenges, urging stricter controls on AMP protections elderly, thereby mitigating health impacts caused by AP.

Bioactive coatings are envisaged as a promising biotechnology to tackle the emerging problem of indoor air pollution. This solution could cope with low concentrations, wide range compounds and hydrophobicity some VOCs, which most important bottlenecks regarding implementation conventional biotechnologies for treatment. A bioactive coating-based bioreactor was tested in this study abatement different VOCs (n-hexane, toluene α-pinene) at empty bed residence times (EBRT) inlet VOC concentrations. The performance reactor compared biofilm-based operated same microbial inoculum. After an acclimation period, achieved abatements over 50% hexane, 80% 70% pinene EBRTs 112-56 s concentrations 9-15 mg m-3. These results were about 25, 10 20% lower than highest removals recorded bioreactor. Both bioreactors experienced decrease by ∼25% 45% 40% pinene, after reducing EBRT 28 s. When progressively reduced, efficiencies did not improve. fact suggested that concentration hindered pollutant result limited mass transfer bioavailability.
