We discuss whether genetic engineering and agroecology are compatible. For this, we investigated three cases of genetically engineered crops considered as scientific discipline well a social movement. One case was the use cisgenic modifications to make potato durably resistant late blight, second CRISPR/Cas rice bacterial blight third case, evaluated experiences with cultivating transgenic Bt crops. These demonstrated that offers opportunities grow in novel integrated pest management (IPM) systems with, direct benefit, decrease chemical crop protection agents, indirect effect role predators biological control agents can become more important than present conventional based on pesticides. used framework four concerns (both cons pros) were gathered from an extensive societal interaction organized around Dutch research project DuRPh, which produced proof-of-concept blight-resistant potato. concluded certainly have synergy context science, when applied making less vulnerable pests diseases combined cultivation using IPM. By contrast, within movement context, varieties may be welcomed if they include traits contribute successful IPM schemes socially benign. Whether would actually deemed desirable or acceptable will, however, vary depending norms values movements. propose some reconcilable dialogue. Gene editing is a relatively new plant‐breeding tool that, unlike earlier methods such as genetic modification, more precise in targeting its manipulations to site‐specific locations within the genome. This precision with gene offers considerable research and development cost economies higher probability of success, particularly for initial discovery phase development. study quantifies advantages versus modification by examining minimum required planted area proposed trait where typical crop technology company can expect break even on investment using real option valuation model. A novel feature model combination decision tree binomial lattice project an embedded abandonment option. primary numerical result from was observation that much smaller potential market (96% smaller) financial when compared same value per acre. held across wide range values. Sensitivity analysis results indicated success driver difference break‐even acreage.
