Animals possess many light-sensitive molecules. They exist as dedicated photoreceptors, or byproducts of biochemical reactions. Their numbers are often high even in species that live environments humans would consider dark, well considered comparably simple (e.g., worms, cnidarians). But why there so photoreceptors? We provide some considerations on this question. Light conveys a significant amount information to animals, through complex spectral and intensity changes, specific the spatial temporal ecological niches inhabits. discuss large number opsins cryptochromes, also present outside eyes partially co-expressed, represent adaptation mechanisms highly light environment within given niche. While theoretical, it is plausible hypothesis most experimentally tested cryptochromes have been shown be functional photoreceptors. The example lunar solar timing marine annelid Platynereis dumerilii provides insight how animals use cellular properties different photoreceptors decode versus light, their adaptations Drosophila melanogaster. suggest future understanding biological processes will strongly benefit from comparative lab field work same species, first for such P. dumerilii. Finally, we point out animal detection systems adaptability crucial understand impact anthropogenic changes ecosystems.

The circadian clock enables anticipation of the day/night cycle in animals ranging from cnidarians to mammals. Circadian rhythms are generated through a transcription-translation feedback loop (TTFL or pacemaker) with CLOCK as conserved positive factor animals. However, CLOCK’s functional evolutionary origin and mechanism action basal unknown. In cnidarian Nematostella vectensis , pacemaker gene transcript levels, including NvClk (the Clock ortholog), appear arrhythmic under constant darkness, questioning role NvCLK. Utilizing CRISPR/Cas9, we allele mutant ( Δ ), revealing behavior loss dark (DD) light (LL), while maintaining 24 hr rhythm light-dark condition (LD). Transcriptomics analysis revealed distinct rhythmic genes wild-type (WT) polypsunder LD compared DD conditions. LD, Δ/Δ polyps exhibited comparable numbers genes, but were reduced DD. Furthermore, showed alterations temporal expression, impacting their potential interactions. Additionally, differential expression non-rhythmic associated cell division neuronal differentiation was observed. These findings that light-responsive pathway can partially compensate for disruption, has evolved synchronize physiology diel earth’s biosphere.

Introduction The morphological characteristics of eyes in fishes are highly diverse and have evolved to meet the specific visual requirements as per their habitats. These features important for researchers ecologists. dusky spinefoot ( Siganus luridus ) is a tropical teleost fish with laterally flattened body which lives Mediterranean Sea. Currently, there no histological data relating eye. Methods In this study, morphology eye was examined enhance our understanding its structure relationship ecology. Detailed gross microscopic were recorded using light scanning microscopy. Results key observations describe main structural , specifically, diameter orbit, architecture three tunics detailed lens description. choroid divided into four layers, had rete mirabile consisting numerous small blood vessels choroidal gland. tapetum lucidum observed, interesting since herbivore herbivores typically lack . Discussion shed new on intricate provide valuable insights abilities adaptations aquatic environment feeding behavior.
