In the general population, Bronchial Asthma (BA) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are among most prevalent chronic respiratory disorders. Significant epidemiologic connections complex pathogenetic pathways link these disorders via interactions at genetic, epigenetic, environmental levels. The coexistence of BA OSA in an individual likely represents a distinct syndrome, that is, collection clinical manifestations attributable to several mechanisms pathobiological signatures. To avoid terminological confusion, this association has been named alternative overlap syndrome (vs represented by obstructive pulmonary disease-OSA association). This comprehensive review summarizes complex, often bidirectional links between constituents syndrome. Cross-sectional, or clinic-based studies unlikely elucidate causality directionality relationships. Even longitudinal epidemiological evaluations cohorts developing over time OSA, during follow-up cannot exclude factors causal influence other known unknown mediators. As such, lot pathophysiological described here have suggestive evidence, biological plausibility, potential actual directionality. By showcasing existing evidence current knowledge gaps, hope is deliberate, focused, collaborative efforts near-future will be geared toward opportunities shine light on unknowns accelerate discovery field health, care, education, research, scholarly endeavors.
