The idea that interdependent and persistent tensions are intrinsic to organizing is now well accepted. Organizational paradox theory has further stressed the importance of accepting such paradoxes, convert them into generative forces. Prefigurative Partaking: Employees’ Environmental Activism in an Energy Utility DOI

The separation between an ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ of organizational politics has become untenable in a rapidly changing political landscape, where people engage environmental activism many different domains. To understand contemporary activism, we situate ourselves empirically within energy utility, Ordalia [pseudonym], large corporation active across Europe heavily criticized by external activists for its carbon emitting operations. By merging Rancière’s method equality notion ‘partaking’ with literature on prefiguration social movements, analyse everyday green actions pursued Ordalia’s employees, which conceptualize as ‘prefigurative partaking’. focusing six characterizing themes prefigurative partaking – aspirational, individual, professional, critical, loyal communal have found that employee is incremental, horizontal boundaryless.
