Among many other requirements, energy efficient building materials require effective daylight harvesting and thermal insulation to reduce electricity usage weatherization cost. The most commonly used material, glass, has limited light management capability poor insulation. For the first time, transparent wood is introduced as a material with following advantages compared glass: (1) high optical transparency over visible wavelength range (>85%); (2) broadband haze (>95%), which can create uniform consistent distribution day without glare effect; (3) unique guiding effect large forward back scattering ratio of 9 for 0.5 cm thick wood; (4) excellent conductivity around 0.32 W m −1 K along growth direction 0.15 in cross plane, much lower than that glass (≈1 ); (5) impact absorption eliminates safety issues often presented by glass; (6) simple, scalable fabrication reliable performance. demonstrated composite exhibits great promise future especially replacement toward sustainable materials.

Daylight stems solely from direct, scattered and reflected sunlight, undergoes dynamic changes in irradiance spectral power composition due to latitude, time of day, year the nature physical environment (reflections, buildings vegetation). Humans their ancestors evolved under these natural day/night cycles over millions years. Electric light, a relatively recent invention, interacts competes with light–dark cycle impact human biology. What are consequences living industrialised urban areas much less daylight more use electric throughout day (and at night), on general health quality life? In this workshop report, we have classified key gaps knowledge research into three main groups: (I) uncertainty as quantity needed for “optimal” physiological psychological functioning, (II) lack consensus practical measurement assessment methods tools monitoring real (day) light exposure across multiple scales, (III) insufficient integration exchange bases different disciplines. Crucial short long-term objectives fill proposed.

In addition to stimulating the visual system, light incident on retina stimulates other biological functions, also referred as non-visual responses. Among most notable functions are human circadian rhythms, which bodily rhythms that, in constant darkness, oscillate with a period close to, but typically slightly longer than 24 hours. Twenty-four-hour light-dark patterns major synchronizer of local time Earth. Entrainment has been implicated health and well-being. Light can elicit an acute alerting effect people, similar "cup coffee." This review summarizes literature how affects entrainment alertness it be used achieve these aims.

Transparent wood (TW) structures in research studies were either thin and highly anisotropic or thick isotropic but weak. Here, transparent plywood (TPW) laminates are investigated as load-bearing biocomposites with tunable mechanical optical performances. Structure-property relationships analyzed. The plies of TPW laminated controlled fiber directions predetermined stacking sequence order to control the directional dependence modulus strength, which would give improved properties weakest direction. Also, angular dependent light scattering intensities showed more uniform distribution. Luminescent was prepared by incorporation quantum dots (QDs) for potential lighting applications. can be designed large-scale use where multiaxial performance is combined new functionalities.

Because well-being is becoming a major challenge in construction alongside energy efficiency, there an increasing need to be able quantify discomfort buildings. In the case of glare, kind glare provoking irritating or distracting effect, no current indices can properly explain high variability existing between individuals' perceptions. This due fact that some factors influencing perception are still unknown and mechanism behind process not well understood. Therefore, this article aims review potentially from daylight. Every factor having been studied at least once for its potential influence on has listed, described, analyzed. Furthermore, study categorizes these by introducing indicator based number studies investigated factor, sample size studies, agreement them. The suggested categories rate as "almost certain," "more likely," "somewhat "inconclusive," unlikely," "less certainly null." Tables summarize main information about factors. As expected, almost luminance source, adaptation level, contrast position source. contrast, do gender optical correction observer. However, window can also cause discomfort eyestrain from glare. This controlled crossover study tested the occupant impacts two modern shading systems designed view while minimizing glare: windows with manually-controlled motorized mesh shades (Mesh Shades) automatic tinting (Dynamic Tint). Ten participants spent fourteen weeks working in a living lab three conditions were non-consecutively repeated two-week periods: Mesh Shades, Dynamic Tint, baseline condition lacking (Blackout Shades). Participants' cognitive function performance, Blackout Shades compared same measures Tint conditions. Two aspects performance—Working Memory Inhibition—improved Satisfaction light as well overall environment Eyestrain symptoms reduced There no statistical differences between settings on or symptoms. research demonstrates that providing an office using methods improve occupants' performance satisfaction reducing eyestrain.

This paper aims to provide an overview of various aspects used measure the overall lighting quality, instead solely focusing on a single aspect. Lighting quality is concept that allows excellent vision while providing high comfort. However, it cannot be measured directly; although, can indicated by measuring different individually. By reviewing thirty eligible studies, based forward and backward citation, eleven were determined influence quality. Preferably, control algorithms for implement all these aspects; however, current generally have limited focus energy or one two specific aspects. Consequently, do not necessarily lighting. reviews measurement methodologies variable namely quantity, distribution, glare, spectral power daylight, directionality, dynamics. We distinguish ad hoc continuous measurements each Ad are accuracy "snapshot"; lower but good over time relevant as input optimizing shows luminance distribution devices highly suitable both measurements. Except using such device although directionality dynamics still require more indicators. Hence, concluded very algorithms.
