This paper proposes that LGBT+ mainstreaming on reality television programme Strictly Come Dancing creates space for audience demand radical, authentic representations of same-sex desire and intimacy, both which challenges normative ballroom dancing. Integrating concepts normativity authenticity explored in existing scholarship, I argue against the encountering through a defensive stance, TV’s normalization queer narratives to promote authentic, inclusive representation. Focusing dance-themed British TV family entertainment, draw reading 285 newspaper articles Dancing’s dance partnerships 35 interviews with equality dancers United Kingdom, conclude active engagement mechanisms can open up spaces reclamation representation its authenticity.
