Classical conditioning is a fundamental associative learning process in which repeated pairings of conditioned stimulus (CS) with an unconditioned (US) lead to the CS eliciting response (CR). Previous research has identified key neural regions involved processing reward-predicting cues and mediating licking behavior. However, mechanisms that sustain high rates across sessions remain elusive, particularly regarding how reward expectation represented on session-by-session basis. While early phases classical have been extensively studied, support consistent performance over time unclear. In this study, we sought understand cortical regions, posterior parietal cortex (PPC), contribute maintaining CR sessions. Using core complex framework derived from Integrated Information Theory (IIT), explored dynamics networks during performance. Our findings suggest while traditional functional connectivity (FC) methods struggled capture complexity sustained behavioral engagement, revealed notably PPC, were significantly correlated enhanced This work suggests potential role PPC supporting expectations responses. By applying investigate substrates behavior, provide novel insights into interaction conditioning, offering promising directions for future

How is conscious experience related to material brain processes? A variety of theories aiming answer this age-old question have emerged from the recent surge in consciousness research, and some are now hotly debated. Although most researchers so far focused on development validation their preferred theory relative isolation, article, written by a group scientists representing different theories, takes an alternative approach. Noting that various often try explain aspects or mechanistic levels consciousness, we argue do not necessarily contradict each other. Instead, several them may converge fundamental neuronal mechanisms be partly compatible complementary, multiple can simultaneously contribute our understanding. Here, consider unifying, integration-oriented approaches been largely neglected, seeking combine valuable elements theories.

How is the information-processing architecture of human brain organised, and how does its organisation support consciousness? Here, we combine network science a rigorous information-theoretic notion synergy to delineate ‘synergistic global workspace’, comprising gateway regions that gather synergistic information from specialised modules across brain. This then integrated within workspace widely distributed via broadcaster regions. Through functional MRI analysis, show correspond brain’s default mode network, whereas broadcasters coincide with executive control network. We find loss consciousness due general anaesthesia or disorders corresponds diminished ability integrate information, which restored upon recovery. Thus, coincides breakdown integration work contributes conceptual empirical reconciliation between two prominent scientific theories consciousness, Global Neuronal Workspace Integrated Information Theory, while also advancing our understanding supports through information.

Recent activities in virtually all fields engaged consciousness studies indicate early signs of a structural turn, where verbal descriptions or simple formalisations conscious experiences are replaced by tools, most notably mathematical spaces. My goal here is to offer three comments that, my opinion, essential avoid misunderstandings these developments on. These concern metaphysical premises approaches, the viability structure-preserving mappings, and question what structure experience first place. I will also explain what, great promises methodologies how they might impact science at large.

A major debate in the field of consciousness pertains to whether neuronal activity or rather causal structure neural circuits underlie generation conscious experience. The former position is held by theoretical accounts based on predictive processing framework (such as neurorepresentationalism and active inference), while latter posited integrated information theory. This protocol describes an experiment, part a larger adversarial collaboration, that was designed address this question through combination behavioral tests mice, functional imaging, patterned optogenetics electrophysiology. experiment will directly test if optogenetic inactivation portion visual cortex not responding behaviorally relevant stimuli affect perception spatial distribution these stimuli, even when neurons being inactivated display no very low spiking activity, so it does induce significant effect other cortical areas. results be compared against predictions, provide contribution towards understanding what substrate is.
