Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the development “social innovation (SI)” research within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) context. Design/methodology/approach This paper explores academic databases (Web Science/Scopus/Sage), identify relevant papers focused on SI. Using a systematic literature review (SLR) with narrative-assessment approach, “VOSviewer” tool used analyse relationships between themes/subthemes related SI in HEIs. Additionally, Excel’s polynomial-trendline feature track publication numbers over time. Findings identified five themes HEIs and trends, each exposing important aspects higher education SI, including “Sustainable Development; Social Entrepreneurship; Digital Transformation; Research; Innovation Culture.” also identifies best practices global universities their programmes across 19 topics, changes volume since 1996.
