The World Health Organization Council on Economics of for All has called human planetary health well-being be moved core decision-making build economies Doing so involves valuing measuring what matters, more better financing, innovation common good rebuilding public sector capacity. We this thinking argue that breastfeeding should recognized in food statistics, while investments considered a carbon offset global financing arrangements sustainable food, economic systems. Breastfeeding women nourish half world's infants young children with immense quantities highly valuable milk. This care work is not counted gross domestic product or national balance sheets, yet ever-increasing commercial milk formula sales are counted. Achieving nutrition targets would realize far greater reductions greenhouse gas emissions than decarbonizing manufacturing. New metrics mechanisms needed achieve health, sustainability equity gains from optimal infant child feeding. Background/Objectives: There is extensive evidence that breastfeeding saves lives, improves health, and provides value to the economy societies worldwide. The Philippines Viet Nam have progressive policies enable breastfeeding, rates in these countries substantively improved. In Philippines, exclusive under six months (EBF) increased from 35.9% (2008) 60.1% (2021) and, Nam, just over a decade, EBF has more than doubled, 17.0% (2010) 45.4% (2021). We aimed use an synthesis consolidate learnings policy support identify insights improve future programming practices two countries, glean can potentially be adapted for similar contexts. Methods: This manuscript presents qualitative of seven purposively selected research articles Nam. Results: Since 1960s, notably improved protecting breastfeeding. Both implemented legislation substantially aligned with International Code Marketing Breast-milk Substitutes subsequent World Health Assembly resolutions. paid maternity leave provisions, providing 6 leave, yet insufficient coverage informal workers, 3.5 while expanding protection workers. From 2006-2021, both alongside improvements barriers implementation remain. Conclusions: Implementation documented progress Our analysis offers valuable lessons applicable beyond contexts, emphasizing need addressing gaps targeted cross-sectoral actions enhance practices. Learnings implementing national marketing restrictions commercial milk formula associated products could inform newly developed regional standards together supportive policies, facilitating harmonization regulatory environments.

Carbon offset frameworks like the UN Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) have largely overlooked interventions involving food, health, and care systems, including breastfeeding. The innovative Green Feeding Climate Action Tool (GFT) assesses environmental impact of commercial milk formula (CMF) use, advocates for breastfeeding support as legitimate carbon offsets. This paper provides an overview GFT’s development, key features, potential uses. offline online GFT were developed using DMADV methodology (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify). reveals that production use CMF by infants under 6 months results in annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between 5.9 7.5 billion kg CO 2 eq. consumes 2,562.5 liters water. As a national example, India, one world’s most populous countries, consumption requires 250.6 water GHG ranging from 579 to 737 million annually, despite country’s high prevalence among months. mainly draws on data low- middle-income countries (LMICs), many high-income (HICs) do not collect suitable such calculations. Despite poor official practices HICs, users can input their own smaller-scale surveys or best estimates. also offers capability estimate compare baseline with counterfactual scenarios, policy changes improve practices. In conclusion, is important innovation quantify CMF’s highlight significance planetary well human health.
