Abstract This article applies the thesis of extended mind to ambient smart environments. These systems are characterised by an environment, such as a home or classroom, infused with multiple, highly networked streams technology working in background, learning about user and operating without explicit interface any intentional sensorimotor engagement from user. We analyse these context work on “classical” mind, conditions “trust glue” phenomenal transparency, find that ill-suited describing our then draw active inference framework, theory brain function which casts cognition process embodied uncertainty minimisation, develop version grounded ontology, where boundaries understood be multiple always shifting. Given this more fluid account we argue environments should thought allostatic control systems, less invisibly support agent’s biological capacity for minimising over interlocking timescales. Thus, functionality so doing, utilise markedly different classical mind.

Human learning essentially involves embodied interactions with the material world. But our worlds now include increasing numbers of powerful and (apparently) disembodied generative AIs. In what follows we ask how best to understand these new (somewhat “alien”, because their nature) resources incorporate them in educational practices. We focus on methodologies that encourage exploration ‘prepared’ environments, such as carefully organised settings Montessori education. Using Active Inference Framework, approach questions by thinking about human epistemic foraging prediction error minimization. end arguing AIs should figure naturally elements prepared environments facilitating sequences precise enabling trajectories self-correction. ways anticipate synergies between (essentially) forms intelligence.

This opinion piece proposes that addiction can be conceptualized as a disruption of an agent’s Markov blanket - the statistical boundary separating internal states from external environment under active inference. Addiction arises when becomes overly rigid, assigning excessive precision to narrow set sensory inputs and associated with addictive stimulus. leads compulsive behaviors aimed at immediate rewards while sacrificing exploration flexible action policies would reduce uncertainty optimize long-term fit environment. The addicted agent trapped in limited behavioral repertoire, unable adapt volatility, thus eroding its own resilience. Rigid, patterns interaction propagate outwards, undermining resilience sustainability wider ecosystem. perspective offers integrative framework for understanding disorders their broader impacts, suggesting interventions pulling away problematic attractors promoting adaptive exploration.
