We examined the productivity effects of a generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, assistive chatbot ChatGPT, in context midlevel professional writing tasks. In preregistered online experiment, we assigned occupation-specific, incentivized tasks to 453 college-educated professionals and randomly exposed half them ChatGPT. Our results show that ChatGPT substantially raised productivity: The average time taken decreased by 40% output quality rose 18%. Inequality between workers decreased, concern excitement about AI temporarily rose. Workers during experiment were 2 times as likely report using it their real job weeks after 1.6 months experiment.

Summary The rising use of artificially intelligent (AI) technologies, including generative AI tools, in organizations is undeniable. As these systems become increasingly integrated into organizational practices and processes, understanding their impact on workers' experiences job designs critical. However, the ongoing discourse surrounding workplace remains divided. Proponents technology extol its benefits for enhancing efficiency productivity, while others voice concerns about potential harm to human workers. To provide greater clarity this pressing issue, article presents a systematic review empirical research that sheds light implications at work. Organized under five inductively generated themes within multilevel framework, we uncover individual, group, factors shape interplay between humans AI. Specifically, are: (1) human–AI collaboration; (2) perceptions algorithmic capabilities; (3) worker attitudes towards AI; (4) as control mechanism management platform‐based work; (5) labor market use. Our offers insights identifies pathways future research. Finally, practical recommendations leaders seeking implement technologies prioritizing employees' well‐being.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI)—including powerful large language models (LLMs)—holds promise for humans be more creative by offering new ideas, or less anchoring on generative AI ideas. We study the causal impact of ideas production short stories in an online experiment where some writers obtained story from LLM. find that access causes evaluated as creative, better written, and enjoyable, especially among writers. However, AI–enabled are similar each other than alone. These results point increase individual creativity at risk losing collective novelty. This dynamic resembles a social dilemma: With AI, individually off, but collectively narrower scope novel content produced.
