Abstract Plant-herbivore interactions have been extensively studied in tomato plants and their most common pests. Tomato plant chemical defenses, both constitutive inducible, play a role mediating these interactions. Damaged alter volatile profiles, affecting herbivore preferences between undamaged damaged plants. However, previous studies on volatiles yielded conflicting results, the chemistry itself as well attraction/repellent response. This study revisits volatile-mediated two of main herbivores: leafminer Tuta absoluta whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum . were analyzed before after damage by each herbivores, preference for oviposition ( T. ) settling was assessed conspecific heterospecific damage. We found that insects consistently preferred over The emission herbivore-induced (HIPVs) increased but decreased While some our findings are line with reports, to oviposit conspecifics, which differs from earlier studies. A comparison HIPVs emitted revealed differences up- or down-regulation, significant variations specific compounds (12 26 damaged-plants). Only compounds, E -caryophyllene tetradecane, significantly varied because either herbivore, overall variation HIPV blend. Introduction Tuta absoluta is currently considered one of the most devastating invasive pests solanaceous plants worldwide, causing severe damage to tomato industry. Insects use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) locate host plant for feeding and oviposition. Those VOCs could be developed as lures pest monitoring control. Methods In this study, differentially accumulated between preferred (tomato) non-preferred (eggplant) were analyzed by GC–MS method, their roles on female T. selection egg laying behaviors investigated using electroantennography (EAG), olfactometer cage experiments. Results A total 39 identified in eggplant. Strong EAG signals obtained 9 VOCs, including 5 highly 4 Further bioassays showed that (1-nonanol, ethyl heptanoate, octanoate o-nitrophenol) attractive females, while (2-phenylethanol, 2-pentylfuran, trans,trans-2,4-nonadienal, 2-ethyl-5-methylpyrazine trans-2-nonenal) repellent, indicating from play important preferences. The activities 1-nonanol octanoate, well repellent trans,trans-2,4-nonadienal trans-2-nonenal, further confirmed Discussion two attractants repellents released VOCs. Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a destructive insect pest toward crops and belongs to the Solanaceae family. Since it was first recorded in South Africa 2016, has spread extensively caused tremendous damage field tunnel-grown tomato crops. This study aimed investigate how T. affects growth physiology of three plant species: tomato, potato, eggplant. These were infested with L1 instar larvae, their assessed during feeding. The host severe, destroying 100% plants. plants distorted 15 days after infestation, that is, before fruit set. For defoliation moderate, but produced fewer tubers compared uninfested Eggplant had visible signs feeding, resulting no significant difference between terms physiological functions. Infested potato stagnant growth, damaged leaves, reduced chlorophyll content, photosynthesis rate, poor transpiration water conductance, intercellular carbon dioxide concentrations. closes knowledge gap on morphological (growth) responses different species also demonstrates differential risk infestations production

Abstract Vegetables are usually herbaceous and succulent plants. This nature of vegetable crops makes them susceptible to attack by a wide variety pests. Traditionally insect resistance has not been as widely investigated disease due relatively smaller economic losses caused insects compared pathogens in earlier times. But owing indiscriminate use pesticides, population natural enemies declined which turn increased the frequency epidemics. Outbreak Tuta absoluta tomato is recent example. Intense selection reduced genetic variability their vulnerability insects. Some pests like Meloidogyne spp., Helicoverpa aphids polyphagous cannot be managed chemical sprays. In such cases resorting best option for breeder. development resistant takes considerable time efforts. Recent advancements omics approaches accelerated breeding. Genetic markers permit effective indirect They tools identifying genomic regions controlling pest resistance. Molecular transfer precise DNA segments from species cultivars thus preventing problem linkage drag. review highlights achievements years breeding via various omics-based viz . genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics metabolomics.

Given variation in planting times host plants Jianghan Plain, switching between H. is inevitable to ensure continuous food availability. We evaluated effect consistent versus diverse larval adult plant feeding experience growth performance, fecundity, longevity, preferences through match-mismatch experiments. Host quality significantly influences development reproduction. Potatoes are identified as optimal for vigintioctopunctata, whereas eggplants negatively affect fecundity. Adult stage determines fecundity irrespective experience. The eggplant remains lower than that observed potato leaves.
