We aimed to examine the longitudinal association between achievement adolescent depressive symptoms.MethodsWe analysed data from Kindergarten (recruited at age 4–5 years; born March, 1999, February, 2000; recruited 2004 November, 2004) Baby 0–1 2003, 2004; January, 2005) cohorts of Longitudinal Study Australian Children. Participants were identified through Medicare enrolment database sampled using a randomised selection stratified by postcode represent population. Achievement measured 12–13 years Goal Questionnaire (ranges 1 7 on each four subscales), symptoms Short Mood Feelings (score ranges 0 26, higher scores indicating more severe symptoms) ages 14–15 (both cohorts) 16–17 (Kindergarten cohort only). A 1-point increase in mastery-approach was associated decreased symptom severity score (Kindergarten, –0·33 [95% CI –0·52 –0·15]; Baby, –0·29 [–0·54 –0·03]), while mastery-avoidance increased 0·35 0·21 0·48]; 0·44 [0·25 0·64]). performance-avoidance but not 0·26 0·11 0·41]; –0·04 [–0·27 0·19]). found little evidence an performance-approach goals.InterpretationDepressive adolescents their goals, which could be targetable risk factors future trials investigate whether school-based interventions that aim enhance consistent mastery (ie, learning subject, rather than assessing comparison peers) prevent depression adolescents.FundingSir Henry Dale Fellowship jointly funded Wellcome Trust Royal Society.
