The intersection of neuroscience and interior design offers innovative methodologies for quantifying human experiences in interiors. This systematic review explores the use immersive virtual reality (IVR) technologies biometrics neuroscience‐informed design, aimed at evaluating current practices, identifying challenges, suggesting future directions. study has three objectives: (1) to examine applications integrated VR/neuroscience design; (2) investigate utilization IVR technologies, devices, sensors measuring employed quantify experience; (3) explore potential directions that integrate insights from neuroscientific research findings methodologies. Using PRISMA methodology, we searched databases, including Taylor Francis Online, ProQuest, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, October 2023, retrieving 164 eligible studies, with 29 reviewed detail. risk bias was assessed by paying attention randomization, intervention deviations, outcome measurement, selection reported results. highlight critical role biometric analysis enhancing validity. However, variability data reliability differences between self‐assessed neurophysiological outcomes, particularly EEG have been noted. Despite these limitations, studies present reliable findings, underscoring interdisciplinary collaboration address technical challenges. Abstract Exposure to natural environments promotes positive psychological effects. Experimental studies on this issue typically have not been able distinguish the contributions of top-down processes from stimulus-driven bottom-up processing. We tested in an online study whether mental imagery (top-down processing) restorative would produce effects, as compared with built and non-restorative urban environments. The participants (n = 70) two countries (Finland Norway) imagined being present different for 30 s, after which they rated their subjective experiences relating vividness imagery, relaxation, emotional arousal, valence (positivity vs. negativity) emotions, effort. In addition, a psychometric scale measuring imagination, nature connectedness, questionnaire preference were filled-in. Imagery elicited stronger more relaxation than Nature connectedness moderated these but did fully explain affective benefits nature. Scores associated consistent way ratings task, suggesting that performed attentively honestly reporting experiences. conclude factors play key role effects A practical implication findings is inclusion elements imagery-based interventions may help increasing states.

Exposure to natural environments, whether real or virtual, has been demonstrated have restorative effects. However, it is unclear these effects depend on the meanings and associations that individuals attribute different environments. This study explored of mental imagery nature (i.e., pure top-down processing) following cognitive stress induction. Fifty students participated in a within-subject where they imagined contents urban words for five minutes each. Self-rated measures indicated stronger sense subjective restoration compared imagery. The heart rate was slower, variability larger during than imagery, suggesting greater degree relaxation with Both tonic phasic electrodermal activity contents. difference driven by higher preference over words, indicating associated positive arousal Notably, participants' reported connection moderated some physiological responses. In conclusion, processes individual play significant role exposure. results also indirectly support inclusion as cost-effective component therapeutic techniques aimed at promoting relaxation.
