This paper reports on a study conducted in primary school Santiago, Chile, where sample of 18 randomly selected first-grade students wore mini video camera mounted eyeglasses their mathematics' lessons. Using Google Images, we identified frames from the recordings classroom teacher appeared students' visual field. The results show that low and high achieving differed paying attention mathematics lessons, particularly when teachers' discourse was accompanied by gestures. Furthermore, were visually engaged with instructional information different ways, at times throughout 90 minutes lesson. findings this allow us to understand explore whether mathematical achievement might be explained examining teacher-student interactions beginning year. have particular importance for early identification lower achievers an stage, hence plan effective interventions support these students.

Abstract Gestures are usually regarded as a casual element of communication processes between logicians. By contrast, we aim to show that gestures have played significant role in logic. We argue the development techniques and their standardization led rise formal notation systems commonly used logic today. In order substantiate this claim, historical use (early) modern is investigated. This investigation uncovers exemplary proof illustrate efficacy representational media Revisiting tradition offers promising paths insights for today’s practice digital age.

In this paper, we discuss a two-way mechanism for acquiring mathematical knowledge: dis-embodied-to-embodied and embodied-to-dis-embodied shifts. Shifting from an embodied representation to dis-embodied enables mathematics learners discover general rules patterns that can be applied wide range of problems, while shifting allows acquire more graspable knowledge mathematics. After discussing these two shifts in mode processing, describe through which parallel employment modes thought grounded deep Therefore, any education program should engage both processing. Finally, conclude it is not possible have efficient by focusing on just one thought.

Abstract This article discusses two mechanisms through which understanding static mathematical concepts (basic and more advanced concepts) in terms of fictive motions or motion events enhance our these concepts. It is suggested that at least are involved this enhancing process. The first mechanism enables us to employ both the motor system visual as contributing cognitive resources process concept. When one representation a concept transformed into another representation, there shift mode processing. facilitates employing new such systems. second mechanism, special form mental simulation, simulate formation concept, which, turn, makes it easier for understand structure properties

This article discusses the cognitive process of transforming one representation mathematical entities into another representation. process, which has been called metaphor , allows us to understand and embody a difficult-to-understand entity in terms an easy-to-understand entity. When is transformed representation, more resources such as visual motor systems can come play target Because their nature, some curves, are group representations, may have great strength. It suggested that directedness, straightness, length, thinness possible features determine degree strength curve. Another factor curve association between shape past experiences observer (and her/his prior knowledge). If individual had repetitive experience observing objects moving along certain curve, for her/him. In fact, it be said kind metonymic relationship formed shapes curves movement experiences.

This study aimed to examine the embodied conceptualization of hope through metaphors. We asked a group participants discuss their hopes in semi-structured interview. examined types hand, head, and eyebrow gestures produced when they were talking about future hopes. The obtained results showed that talked hopes, mainly used forward hand gestures, rightward head upward gestures. Based on these results, it is suggested various semantic components emotional associations are metaphorically different manners parts body. aspect conceptualized as movement gesture. good or positive associated with gesture an call this process distributed embodiment metaphorical concept.
