Abstract Objectives Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is characterized by a pervasive negative reaction to uncertainty. It transdiagnostic risk factor for various mental disorders. Since decisions often need be made in the face uncertainty, IU associated with indecisiveness, dispositional difficulty making decisions. Indecisiveness also linked range While seen as causal experimental studies on this assumption are lacking. Methods In pre‐registered, adequately powered study ( N = 301), was experimentally increased or decreased compared control group, and effect indecisiveness observed. assessed situational context, focusing two that were personally relevant participants. Results The manipulation successfully affected IU. As predicted, led more across both Exploratory analyses found mediated indecisiveness. Conclusions results first demonstrate thus contributing explanation role management plays it. Moreover, they have implications treating disorders highlighting phenomenon

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) has been proposed as a transdiagnostic mechanism driving anxiety, depression, and eating disorder symptoms. ABSTRACT Introduction As an important transdiagnostic factor, intolerance of uncertainty (IU) can predict suicidal ideation (SI). But little is known about the underlying mechanisms. The present study examined chain mediating roles three maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies and psychache in relation between IU SI, as well gender differences. Methods A number 1532 Chinese adolescents (43.1% males; baseline mean age = 15.00 years, SD 1.57) completed self‐report questionnaires on IU, self‐blame, rumination, catastrophizing, SI for two waves, 6 months apart. Results results indicated that predicted through serial mediation CER psychache, but did not strategies. catastrophizing were stronger among females than males. Conclusion advance our understanding how predicts highlighting importance development SI.

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), the tendency to find negative, is a fundamental transdiagnostic dimension across anxiety-related disorders. Over past two decades, there has been an increase in both clinical and experimental research on role IU maintenance treatment However, lack integration findings from mechanistic perspective, which slowed progress translational research. This review seeks fill this gap by synthesising (e.g. randomised controlled trials) lab-based) literature psychological mechanisms that drive change The highlighted that: (1) cognitive restructuring, supported such as appraisal, modify IU-related cognitions, (2) behavioural exposures, inhibitory learning, alter cognitions physiological arousal, (3) mindfulness techniques underpinned attentional monitoring, decentering, acceptance, cognitions. Across different therapeutic reviewed, was evidence for how emotions behaviours. Directions further include directly comparing effectiveness produce anxiety disorders other mental health disorders, examining specificity over anxious traits. Overall, provide foundation future efforts build upon maximising existing interventions and/or develop novel target dispositional situational uncertainty-related distress beyond.

A total 366 undergraduate students (50.3% females; mean age = 21.24 ± 2.96 years) completed an online survey that included measures uncertainty, experiences, problems, The findings indicated relationship between was mediated by experiences. Methods Multilevel data from 101 managers (1,010 measurement occasions) were used test hypotheses. Outcome uncertainty is known to engage motivational and emotional phenomena. However, there remain questions as how outcome related gain loss information availability via performance feedback interact impact phenomena: (1) generally, (2) in relation individual differences intolerance of uncertainty, current symptoms anxiety depression. To address these gaps the literature, we manipulated level (gain, loss, none) (present, absent) during an online cognitive control task (n = 70), examine factors different read-outs: subjective responses (discrete states, valence, arousal), accuracy, reaction times, fixation count. Self-reported general distress, anxious arousal, anhedonic depression were also collected.
