The social determinants of health (SDH) focus on the social, physical and economic factors that impact human health. Studies have revealed animal guardians face a range challenges in attaining positive welfare outcomes for their companion animals, which can be influenced by socioeconomic environmental factors. Despite this, there is lack research specifically exploring relationship between SDH outcomes. Residents of distressed areas inner cities have less access to many life's necessities and amenities than their more well-off counterparts. Geographic proximity has been identified as a primary barrier accessing care for pets potentially creating animal welfare deserts. It is important to understand the reasons for companion animal relinquishment help reduce financial and ethical problems arising from too many dogs cats in shelters. This study investigates socioeconomic factors behind Australia, utilizing data five shelters, over a five-year period (Financial Year 2018/19 2022/23). Descriptive statistics reveal that median Index of Relative Socio-Economic Advantage Disadvantage (IRSAD) decile guardians who relinquished their was 4 out 10, indicating they live areas lower-than-average status. Cats accounted 59.4% 40.6% all relinquishments, with more relinquishments lower deciles (1–5) (cats: 62.6%, dogs: 65.8%). Abstract In animal sheltering and protection, One Welfare initiatives include supporting people who have difficulty providing for their animals because of limitations in physical or mental health, income housing. However, little research has focused on the actual work that such involve shelter staff protection officers. We used institutional ethnography to explore how activities occur frontline practices better understand this is coordinated.
