Around 143,000 chemicals find their fate in wastewater treatment plants the European Union. Low efficiency on removal at lab-based studies and even poorer performance large scale experiments have been reported. Here, a coupled biological technology (bioaugmentation composting) is proposed proved for pharmaceutical active compounds degradation toxicity reduction. The optimization was conducted through situ inoculation of Penicillium oxalicum XD 3.1 an enriched consortium (obtained from non-digested sewage sludge), into pilot piles sludge under real conditions. This bioaugmentation-composting system allowed better micropollutants (21 % total pharmaceuticals detected beginning experiment) than traditional composting process. Particularly, with P. some recalcitrant like carbamazepine, cotinine methadone, also produced stabilization features mature compost (significant passivation copper zinc, higher macronutrients value, adequate physicochemical conditions soil direct application less toxic effect germination) compared to control culture. These findings provide feasible, alternative strategy obtain safer scale.
