The etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been linked to both genetic and epigenetic factors. Among the factors, exposure valproic acid (VPA), an antiepileptic mood-modulating drug, shown induce characteristic traits ASD when exposed during embryogenesis. Conversely, in animal models, enriched environment (EE) demonstrated positive behavioral neural effects, suggesting its potential as a complementary treatment pharmacological approaches central nervous system disorders. In this study, we utilized zebrafish model characteristics induced by VPA hypothesized that sensory stimulation through EE could ameliorate neuroanatomical features associated with ASD. To test hypothesis, assessed social behavior, cerebellar volume, Purkinje cell populations via histology immunohistochemistry after exposing fish EE. results revealed exhibited deficits, reduced cortex decrease c-Fos-positive cells layer. contrast, VPA-exposed treated showed increased socialization, augmented elevation cells. These findings suggest alterations may be ameliorated treatment, highlighting therapeutic impact conditions related

FELASA and AALAS established a joint working group to advise on good practices for the exchange of fish research. In first manuscript, made recommendations health monitoring reporting results. The focus this second related manuscript is biosecurity in facilities. First, we define risk contamination personnel by zoonotic pathogens from or system water, including human mycobacteriosis. Preventive measures are recommended, such as wearing task-specific personal protective equipment. Then discuss biosecurity, highlighting establishment barriers preserve status facility. A functional program relies integration entire animal facility organization, flow staff animals, water treatments, equipment sanitation. Finally, propose 4 steps introducing new colonies: consideration international trade national restrictions; assessing according source developmental stage; establishing quarantine barriers; triage, screening, treatment newly imported fish. We then provide 3 realistic sample scenarios illustrate practical assessments mitigation based considerations conditions.

Published: April 1, 2022

Zebrafish, like all fish species, use sound to learn about their environment. Thus, human-generated (anthropogenic) added the environment has potential disrupt detection of biologically relevant sounds, alter behavior, impact fitness, and produce stress other effects that can well-being animals. This review considers bioacoustics zebrafish in laboratory with two goals. First, we discuss hearing problems issues must be considered any studies get a clear understanding capabilities. Second, focus on sounds tank its physiology health. To do this, underwater acoustics very specialized tanks, which live are studied. We consider what is known impacts well-being. conclude suggestions regarding major gaps as well questions explored better understand how tolerate deal acoustic world they within laboratories.
