Sodium alginate is one of the most interesting and investigated applied biopolymers due to its advantageous properties. Among them, easy, simple, mild, rapid, non-toxic gelation by divalent cations important. In addition, it abundant, low-cost, eco-friendly, bio-compatible, bio-adhesive, biodegradable, stable, etc. All those properties were systematically considered within this review. Carotenoids are functional components in human diet with plenty health benefits. However, their sensitivity environmental process stresses, chemical instability, easy oxidation, low water solubility, bioavailability limit food pharmaceutical applications. Encapsulation may help overcoming these limitations review, role alginate-based encapsulation systems improving stability carotenoids explored. It be concluded that all increase carotenoid stability, but only micro- nano-size, as well emulsion-based, improve bioaccessibility. incorporation other further system Furthermore, main techniques for evaluating briefly considered. We aimed to determine the chemical profile (assisted by high-Performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass apectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) experiments three extracts obtained different polarity solvents viz. ethyl acetate (to extract semipolar compounds), methanol and water highly polar metabolites) from P. leaves. Their anti-diabetic effects were investigated vitro assessing their inhibition toα-amylase α-glucosidase. Assessment neuroprotective potential was carried out against acetyl-(AChE) butyryl-(BChE) cholinesterase enzymes. HPLC-ESI-MS/MS showed total 17 chromatographic peaks primarily classified six flavonoids, two saponins, fatty acids. Antioxidant assays revealed remarkable activity for extracts.
