Purpose This study aims to generate empirical insights into the extent which ChatGPT, a highly capable AI chatbot building on OpenAI's GPT family, is perceived and leveraged by EFL learners beyond classroom.Design/Methodology quantitative cross-sectional investigation draws upon technology acceptance model (TAM) as developed (Davis, F. D. 1989. "Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of use, User Acceptance Information Technology." Management System Quarterly 13 (3): 983–1003) conceptualize learners' attitudes, intentions, actual behaviors using ChatGPT in their informal digital learning English. A total 405 answered revised TAM questionnaire with scales including Use, Attitude, Behavioral Intention, Actual Use.Findings The results structural equation modeling analyses indicated that while Use fails predict Attitude directly, it can influence through full mediator Usefulness. It was also found who take positive attitudes toward usefulness tend demonstrate higher level positively strongly predicts English outside classroom.Originality/value provides evidence supports potential powerful language-learning tool should utilize participate ecological CALL creatively productively.

Recent advancements in natural language processing and large models have ushered learning into the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Recognizing affordances generative AI tools, this paper aims to examine degree which L2 learners accepted leveraged model platforms (e.g. ChatGPT, Bing Chat) for informal digital English (IDLE) purposes. Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-method design, study draws on technology acceptance (TAM) collects data via adapted TAM questionnaire interview guide. A total 867 Chinese EFL (English as a foreign language) answered online survey, while 20 attended post-survey interviews. Drawing validated structural that elucidates inter-factor relationships perceived ease use, usefulness, intention actual quantitative analysis provides statistical accounts learners' adoption Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) technologies. The qualitative findings, derived from data, reveal three key themes: (1) how usefulness chatbots IDLE emerges hands-on experimentation with these tools; (2) use increases negotiate chatbot constraints; (3) involves using tools tutors or conversation partners. Connections between findings enhance our understanding constraints highly capable technologies participate creative practices.
