Abstract Background The mental health of psychiatric healthcare professionals has become a critical area research due to the increasing demands and stressors inherent in their work environment. To explore the work events, strategies, context and individual characteristics of emotional labour among neonatal nurses based on reaction mechanism affections, so as to provide a reference for improving strategies. A phenomenological qualitative design was utilized. Fourteen from tertiary Grade children's hospital were selected semi-structured interviews, data analysed, summarized refined by Colaizzi's seven-step analysis method. Four themes eight sub-themes explain experience nurses: (a) sources in relatively confined environment; (b) strategies consequences under different reactions; (c) contextual factors strategies; (d) personality traits.
