Plastics, once celebrated for their versatility, have now become a significant environmental threat due to persistence, with microplastics (MPs) posing serious concerns. This study examines the prevalence of MPs across various domains, focusing on impact ecosystems and human health, along analytical procedures treatment techniques. It has been found that Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is most common procedure detection. Few policies/steps formulated by international organizations/governments impede proliferation MPs, which duly included herein. Germany, as Europe's largest economy major contributor plastic pollution, surprisingly dearth research in this area. So, focuses MP pollution German aquatic environment highlights alarming concentrations up 11,050 particles/L rivers 9,000 particles/m³ wastewater plants (WWTPs). Fibers dominate shape, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) are polymers, primarily originating from municipal/industrial wastewater. Based these findings identified gaps, paper provides recommendations future areas improvement, such standardized measurement units, more studies, combined effects other emerging contaminants.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biobased and biodegradable polymers that offer a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics, addressing the escalating concerns over plastic pollution. While their environmental advantages well-documented, efficient degradation of PHAs in natural engineered environments remains critical component lifecycle. This review provides comprehensive overview PHA-degrading bacteria isolated from diverse ecosystems highlights pivotal role PHA depolymerases achieving circularity. Microbial adaptation conditions, such as extreme temperatures, salinity, pH, significantly influences enzymes properties, including stability, activity, substrate specificity enzymes. These adaptations often enhance enzyme, performance, enabling functionality under challenging conditions. Consequently, extremophilic microorganisms invaluable resources for discovering engineering robust industrial applications. underscores urgent need further research improve ecological economic sustainability waste management.

Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPLs) can move along the food chain to higher-level organisms including humans. Three significant routes for MNPLs have been reported: ingestion, inhalation, dermal contact. Accumulating evidence supports intestinal toxicity of ingested their role as drivers increased incidence colorectal cancer (CRC) in high-risk populations such inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. However, mechanisms are largely unknown. In this review, by using leading scientific publication databases (Web Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect), we explored possible effects related MNPL exposure on gut epithelium healthy conditions IBD The summarized idea that oral may contribute epithelial damage, thus promoting sustaining chronic development inflammation, mainly Colonic mucus layer disruption further facilitate passage into bloodstream, contributing toxic different organ systems platelet activation, which may, turn, inflammation CRC development. The continuous release of municipal and industrial products into the environment poses a growing concern for public health. Among environmental pollutants, polystyrene (PS) stands out as primary constituent plastic waste, given its widespread use high production rates owing to durability user-friendly properties. detection microparticles (PS-MPs) in various living organisms has been well-documented, posing serious threat due their potential passage human ecosystem. In this manuscript, we aimed study toxicological effects low concentrations pristine photoaged PS-MPs murine macrophage cell line. To purpose, were by indoor exposure visible light simulate weathering solar irradiation (PS-MPs3h). Physical characterization revealed that treatment results particle degradation possible nanoparticles. Monocultures RAW264.7 line then exposed PS-MPs3h at comparable experimental measurements from biological samples, assess cytotoxicity, intracellular oxidative stress, genotoxicity, inflammatory effects. Significant toxicity-related outcomes observed cells treated with both even (0,10 μg/ml 1 μg/ml). exhibited greater adverse compared PS-MPs, including reduced viability, increased ROS production, elevated DNA damage, upregulation IL-6 NOS2 gene expression. Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive pollutants impacting ecosystems worldwide, causing physical harm and behavioral changes in wildlife. MP toxicity mainly depends on size, porosity, weathering, surrounding compounds. MPs disrupt feeding metabolism, resulting reproductive, neurological, disorders. These impacts significantly alter ecological niches reduce animal survival. Understanding these is crucial for assessing the broader effects of plastic pollution developing effective mitigation strategies. This review investigated 110 papers quantifying consequences while considering their_physiological basis, emphasizing significance their potential long-term influence populations ecosystems. study thoroughly investigates model species, including plankton, fish, amphibians, crustaceans, pollinators, mammals. Fish exhibited most significant impact, crustaceans showed least. Mice, representing mammals, displayed severe physiological damage.
