Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) often demonstrate stress, distress, anxiety, depression, are at risk for suicide. These affect their quality of life (QoL) but less attention has been given to psychological variables that may impact response treatment. This study aims systematically review publications during 2013–2023 collate evidence on the effects HNC treatment outcomes. We searched Ovid Medline, PubMed, Scopus, Web Science articles examined factors related outcomes in patients HNC. There were 29 studies (5 before treatment, 2 during, 17 after, 5 covering whole management trajectory) including 362,766 patients. The either behavioral (adjustment coping strategy, unrealistic ideas, self-blame), cognitive (elevated psychiatric co-comorbidity), or emotional (distress, nervousness, fear disfigurement complications). It was found there a relationship between depression decreased survival Pretreatment pain an independent predictor large sample distress level approximately 54%, problems ranged 10 44%, while financial difficulties identified 54% Sixty-nine percent reported have used least one cost-coping strategy within 6 months after initiation. During post-treatment period, increased from 15% baseline 29%, recurrence among 35% Several predict QoL survivors. Distress encompasses physical burden diagnosis Routine screening early interventions target could improve survivors' QoL. A systematic standardized measurement approach is warranted homogenize these findings understand underlying relationships.

Objective To compare prevalence of depression between HNC other cancers. Design, Setting, Participants This retrospective cohort study used population-level data on aged 18 years or older who participated 2019 National Health Interview Survey had completed Personal Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8). The analysis was performed August 7, 2023, April 5, 2024. Exposure Any diagnosis. Main Outcomes Measures main outcome severity based PHQ-8. magnitude difference baseline characteristics measured those types, 95% CIs were to measure precision these estimates. Multivariable logistic regressions evaluate association demographic, socioeconomic, anxiety, clinical variables depression. Results From a weighted 23 496 725 adult cancer, 377 080 diagnosed (87.5% 51-84 years; 77.9% male). any PHQ-8 (mild, moderate, severe) 40.1% vs 22.3% Compared cancers, equally likely screen positive for anxiety (23.6% 16.0%; difference, 7.6%; CI, −5.9% 21.1%), take medication (10.1% 13.9%; −3.8%; −11.9% 4.4%), state that they never feel depressed (59.7% 53.7%; 6.0%; −9.1% 21.0%). Abstract Background Head and neck cancers (HNC) are associated with high rates of anxiety. Anxiety has been linked to biological pathways implicated in cancer progression, though little is known about its effects on overall survival. We hypothesized that higher pretreatment anxiety levels patients HNC would predict poorer 2‐year survival expected this relationship be mediated by both systemic inflammation tumor response treatment. Methods Patients ( N = 394) reported symptomatology via the GAD‐7 at treatment planning. Pre‐treatment hematology workup provided an index (SII; 292). Clinical data review yielded Logistic multiple regressions Cox proportional hazard models tested relationships. Results Higher were significantly (hazard ratio [HR], 1.039; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.014–1.066, p 0.002). The association between SII was not significant, (odds [OR], 1.033; CI, 1.001–1.066, 0.043). Tumor fully symptoms (HR, 9.290, 6.152–14.031, < 0.001). Conclusions response, but inflammation, emerged as a potential pathway mediating effect. Screening for may beneficial help prospectively address these concerns ameliorate potentially detrimental impact clinically meaningful outcomes.
