A quantitative approach using South African Trends International Mathematics and Science Studies (TIMSS) 2019 Grades 5&9 data with positivist philosophical stance was used to explore use. For long time, most school research took form of small-scale qualitative studies, such case studies or critical policy studies; however, has witnessed an increasing demand for high-quality, large-scale current study. TIMSS utilised two-stage stratified cluster sampling design, schools by size selecting intact classes. This study focusses on Africa where 297 schools, 294 mathematics teachers, 11,903 students were sampled at Grade 5 level, and, 9 sample consisted 519 543 teachers 20,829 students.
