Abstract Despite the widespread adoption of Routing Protocol for Low-power and Lossy Networks (RPL) in IoT environments, its inherent limitations addressing security vulnerabilities have left networks vulnerable to ongoing attacks. This paper introduces a novel intrusion detection system tailored specifically networks, with focus on mitigating attacks at network’s edge. The study presents Hybrid Rank Attack (HRA), sophisticated threat exploiting RPL by alternately advertising decreased increased rank values control messages. Extensive experimentation evaluates detrimental effects HRA critical network metrics including exchanged messages, energy consumption, PDR, latency, memory footprint. Additionally, lightweight distributed countermeasure algorithm is proposed effectively mitigate impact HRA. Simulation-based evaluations demonstrate significant reductions overhead (68.7%) consumption (61.83%), minimal additional RAM utilization (1.05%). solution enhances resilience RPL-based against threats.
