Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a versatile synthetic polymer, used for the design of hydrogels, porous membranes and films. Its solubility in water, film- hydrogel-forming capabilities, non-toxicity, crystallinity excellent mechanical properties, chemical inertness stability towards biological fluids, superior oxygen gas barrier good printability availability (relatively low production cost) are main aspects that make PVA suitable variety applications, from biomedical pharmaceutical uses to sensing devices, packaging materials or wastewater treatment. However, pure present limited flexibility poor biocompatibility biodegradability, which restrict its use alone various applications. mixed with other polymers biomolecules (polysaccharides, proteins, peptides, amino acids etc.), as well inorganic/organic compounds, generates wide PVA’s shortcomings considerably improved, new functionalities obtained. Also, transformation brings features opens door unexpected uses. The review focused on recent advances PVA-based hydrogels.

: Hydrogels produced using the freeze-thaw method have demonstrated significant potential for wound management applications. However, their production requires precise control over critical factors including freezing temperature and choice of matrix-forming excipients, which no consensus on optimal conditions currently exists. This study aimed to address this gap by evaluating effects above-mentioned variables cryogel performance.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) physical cryogels that contained the additives of o-, m-, and p-bis-phenols or phenol were prepared, their physico-chemical characteristics macroporous morphology solute release dynamics evaluated. These phenolic caused changes in viscosity initial PVA solutions before freeze–thaw processing facilitated growth rigidity resultant cryogels, while heat endurance decreased. The magnitude effects depended on interposition hydroxyls molecules used was stipulated by H-bonding with OH-groups. Subsequent rinsing such “primary” pure water led to lowering rigidity. average size macropores inside these heterophase gels also additive type. It found substances from additive-containing occurred via virtually a free diffusion mechanism; therefore, drug delivery systems as loaded either pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, phenol, upon vitro agar tests, exhibited antibacterial activity typical phenols. promising biomedical potential studied nanocomposite gel materials is supposed.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid)-based microspheres of two types, with and without macropores, were prepared; their morphology particle size evaluated. These entrapped as disperse fillers into the bulk macroporous cryogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). It was found that rigidity resultant composite increased markedly compared to unfilled same PVA concentration. The resulting composites further tested for potential act drug carriers. With that, simvastatin included filler particles directly in course preparation, followed by entrapment such drug-loaded cryogel. In turn, ibuprofen sodium salt introduced preliminary prepared filled drug-free microspheres. experimental study release kinetics showed due non-covalent interactions both discrete phase, prolongation processes observed.
