Application of lower limb markers and wristbands for deep vein thrombosis to reduce incidence of pulmonary embolism in patients admitted to the intensive care unit: A cohort study

Abstract
Objective
To
improve
communication
and
patients'
safety
in
the
intensive
care
unit
(ICU),
we
studied
value
of
applying
skin
markers
wristbands
for
ICU
patients
with
evidence
lower‐extremity
deep
vein
thrombosis
(DVT)
found
on
ultrasound
screening
within
24
h
admission.
Methods
This
was
a
single‐center
study
over
one
year.
In
first
six
months,
applied
standard
to
our
(control
group)
compared
them
intervention
group
where
introduced
DVT.
The
primary
outcome
occurrence
pulmonary
embolism
(PE).
We
also
monitored
families'
satisfaction.
Results
A
total
1231
were
admitted
during
period
96
included
(7.8%)
being
positive
Patients
equally
divided
into
two
periods
(
n
=
48
each)
had
no
differences
demographics,
severity
scores
hospital
length
stay.
PE
identical
(6.25%
each
group;
p
1.00).
Satisfaction
higher
(very
satisfied
89.6%
vs.
60.4%
controls;
0.001).
Conclusion
Application
DVT
upon
admission
did
not
reduce
but
improved
satisfaction
families.
