Inflammation plays a crucial role in stroke pathogenesis. Thus, it is not surprising that cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors have been advocated diagnostics. Our study the first to evaluate salivary cytokine profile patients with ischemic stroke. Twenty-five subacute an age-, sex-, oral hygiene status-matched control group were enrolled study. The number of was set priori based on our previous experiment (α = 0.05, test power 0.9). Salivary concentrations tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), 10 (IL-10) assessed using ELISA method. We showed TNF-α IL-6 significantly higher, whereas IL-10 content statistically lower both non-stimulated (NWS) stimulated (SWS) whole saliva patients. However, evaluation cytokines NWS rather than SWS may be greater diagnostic value. Of particular note TNF-α, which indicate cognitive/physical impairment post-stroke individuals. This parameter distinguishes from healthy controls correlates cognitive decline severity functional impairment. It also differentiates (with high sensitivity specificity) normal cognition mild moderate Saliva alternative blood for assessing patients, although further studies larger patient population are needed.

Chronic heart failure (HF) is an important clinical, social, and economic problem. A key role in HF progression played by oxidative stress. Free oxygen radicals, formed under the conditions of hypoxia reperfusion, participate myocardial stunning other forms post-reperfusion damage. patients also suffer from disorders connected with saliva secretion. However, still little known about mechanisms that impair secretory function salivary glands these patients. In presented study, we were first to compare antioxidant barrier, protein glycoxidation, nitrosative/nitrative stress non-stimulated (non-stimulated whole (NWS)) stimulated (SWS) The study included 50 normal (NS) secretion (n = 27) hyposalivation (HS) 23), as well age- gender-matched control group 50). We demonstrated that, NWS HS, concentration low-molecular-weight non-enzymatic antioxidants decreased (↓total polyphenols, ↓ascorbic acid, ↓reduced glutathione, ↓albumin) compared secretion, (except albumin). observed increased content glycoxidation products (↑dityrosine, ↑kynurenine, ↑glycophore) SWS HS healthy controls. Interestingly, dityrosine, N-formylkynurenine, glycophore was significantly higher those NS NO considerably lower, while levels peroxynitrite nitrotyrosine subjects Salivary gland dysfunction occurs chronic submandibular being least efficient. Oxidative/nitrosative may be one responsible for impairment
