Grounded cognition and the representation of momentum: abstract concepts modulate mislocalization

Abstract
Literature
on
grounded
cognition
argues
that
mental
representations
of
concepts,
even
abstract
involve
modal
simulations.
These
modalities
are
typically
assumed
to
reside
within
the
body,
such
as
in
sensorimotor
system.
A
recent
proposal
physical
invariants,
momentum
or
gravity,
can
also
be
substrates
which
concepts
grounded,
expanding
limits
grounding
beyond
body.
We
here
experimentally
assessed
this
by
exploiting
representational
effect
and
concept
success.
If
success
is
invariant
momentum,
should
larger
for
successful
targets.
tested
hypothesis
across
four
experiments
(three
pre-registered).
In
a
surprising
finding,
we
find
hints
large
trial
numbers
may
hinder
being
able
effect,
further
investigated
future
research.

The
objective
of
this
study
was
to
elucidate
the
characteristics
visually
perceived
momentum
others’
motions.
Twenty
participants
watched
and
compared
two
consecutive
point-light
running
motions:
one
at
a
fixed
velocity
8.0
km/h
other
seven
velocities
(5.6,
6.4,
7.2,
8.0,
8.8,
9.6,
10.4
km/h).
They
then
evaluated
which
had
greater
momentum,
or
if
they
were
same.
results
indicated
that
as
deviated
from
standard
km/h,
correct
rates
increased;
in
particular,
rate
5.6
differed
most
velocity,
greatest
(
p
<
.001).
Additionally,
mean
response
times
6.4
relatively
smaller
than
significantly
lower
(both
.05).
This
indicates
humans
can
accurately
perceive
motions,
consistent
with
previous
studies
demonstrating
an
accurate
perception
physical
mechanical
properties
human-like
motion.
