Abstract Literature on grounded cognition argues that mental representations of concepts, even abstract involve modal simulations. These modalities are typically assumed to reside within the body, such as in sensorimotor system. A recent proposal physical invariants, momentum or gravity, can also be substrates which concepts grounded, expanding limits grounding beyond body. We here experimentally assessed this by exploiting representational effect and concept success. If success is invariant momentum, should larger for successful targets. tested hypothesis across four experiments (three pre-registered). In a surprising finding, we find hints large trial numbers may hinder being able effect, further investigated future research. Regarding central hypothesis, although only one experiment found statistically significant support, tended toward same direction three others well. order draw robust conclusions about results, performed mini meta, aggregates effects inference statistics N = 271 participants. Across experiments, was significant, suggesting evidence favor hypothesis. results interpreted with caution there inconsistency magnitude small, when asked who they believe moved faster, participants did not reliably indicate target.

The objective of this study was to elucidate the characteristics visually perceived momentum others’ motions. Twenty participants watched and compared two consecutive point-light running motions: one at a fixed velocity 8.0 km/h other seven velocities (5.6, 6.4, 7.2, 8.0, 8.8, 9.6, 10.4 km/h). They then evaluated which had greater momentum, or if they were same. results indicated that as deviated from standard km/h, correct rates increased; in particular, rate 5.6 differed most velocity, greatest ( p < .001). Additionally, mean response times 6.4 relatively smaller than significantly lower (both .05). This indicates humans can accurately perceive motions, consistent with previous studies demonstrating an accurate perception physical mechanical properties human-like motion.

Abstract Grounded cognition states that mental representations of concepts consist experiential aspects. For example, the concept “cup” consists sensorimotor experiences from interactions with cups. Typical modalities in which are grounded are: The system (including interoception), emotion, action, language, and social Here, we argue this list should be expanded to include physical invariants (unchanging features motion; e.g., gravity, momentum, friction). Research on reasoning consistently demonstrates represented as fundamentally other grounding substrates, therefore qualify. We assess several theories representation (simulation, conceptual metaphor, spaces, predictive processing) their positions invariants. find classic theories, simulation metaphor theory, have not considered invariants, while spaces processing have. conclude included into core mechanisms theory well suited do this. Furthermore, very promising also integrated future.

The visual naturalness of a rendered character’s motion is an important factor in computer graphics work, and the rendering jumping motions no exception to this. However, computational mechanism that underlies observer’s judgement has not yet been fully elucidated. We hypothesized observers would perceive as more natural when jump trajectory was consistent with vertical projectile based on Earth’s gravity. asked human participants evaluate point-light whose height duration were modulated. results showed observers’ rating varied modulation ratios duration. Interestingly, ratings high even differed from actual jump. To explain this tendency, we constructed models predicted theoretical formula calculated errors between observed trajectories. pattern correlated closely participants’ ratings.
