Penicillium meliponae, a recently described and rare species, was isolated as an endophytic fungus from the Amazonian plant Duguetia sthelechantha, has been proven to be pigment producer. Considering high productivity of this species lack data on its chemical composition, present study aimed characterize profile P. meliponae evaluate influence agitation use different culture media. For purpose, liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) molecular networking were used, allowing identification 17 azaphilone molecules sclerotiorin-like skeletons, becoming first report species. In addition, production patterns in tested media indicative that is sensitive changes composition carbon source presence agitation. Furthermore, work contributes fragmentation mechanisms possible structural arrangements for azaphilones sclerotiorin type serves repository information gas-phase behavior metabolite experiments will assist future studies at discovery azaphilones.

The use of fungal pigments as dyes is attractive for various industries. Fungal arise a strong interest because they are suitable large-scale industrial production and have none the drawbacks synthetic pigments. Their advantages over or vegetal mark them prime target. Azaphilones polyketides bearing highly oxygenated pyranoquinone bicyclic core produced by numerous species ascomyceteous basidiomyceteous fungi. In order to find new azaphilones dyes, strain Penicillium hirayamae U., known producer azaphilone but, chemically, barely studied so far, was investigated molecular networking led isolation three azaphilones, penazaphilone J-L, along with D, isochromophilone VI, sclerketide E. structures were determined based on extensive NMR absolute configurations ECD. All compounds evaluated their cytotoxic activity against human cell lines pathogenic-resistant strains.
