The biomass productivity content cultured in 20 g/L fertilizer 6 days were 1.04 g/L/d 4.41 mg/g, respectively. These values are approximately 1.3- 1.4-fold higher than those achieved with medium, cost per gram microalgal reduced by about 97%. was further increased 6.03 mg/g when supplemented mM urea, 96%. When doses ≥1 μM used NIH/3T3 cells, there a significant reduction levels reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced following irradiation treatments. results show that urea supplements has potential develop anti-blue-light oxidation products reduce economic challenges applied carbon biofixation biofuel production.

Fucoxanthin is a major light-harvesting pigment in ecologically important algae such as diatoms, haptophytes, and brown (Phaeophyceae). Therefore, it driver of global primary productivity. Species these algal groups are colored because the high amounts fucoxanthin bound to proteins their photosynthetic machineries enable efficient absorption green light. While structure fucoxanthin-chlorophyll has recently been resolved, biosynthetic pathway still unknown. Here, we identified two enzymes central this by generating corresponding knockout mutants diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum that due lack fucoxanthin. Complementation with native genes or orthologs from haptophytes restored biosynthesis. We propose complete path diatoms based on carotenoid intermediates vitro biochemical assays. It substantially more complex than anticipated reveals diadinoxanthin metabolism regulatory hub connecting photoprotective xanthophyll cycle formation Moreover, our data show evolved repeated duplication neofunctionalization for violaxanthin de-epoxidase zeaxanthin epoxidase. Brown described here instead use an alternative predicted involve fewer enzymes. Our work represents step forward elucidating biosynthesis understanding evolution, biogenesis, regulation machinery algae.
