Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are well-known carbohydrates that promote healthy gut microbiota and have been previously demonstrated to enhance levels of Bifidobacterium Lactobacillus. Its bifidogenic properties associated with positive health outcomes such as reduced obesity anti-inflammatory properties, and, therefore, is in use a prebiotic supplement support microbiota. However, the changes age, which may lead differential responses treatments prebiotics other dietary supplements. To address this concern, we implemented 24-h vitro culturing method determine whether FOS treatment three different adult age groups would effect. The interest ranged from 25 70 years were split into young adults, older adults for purposes analysis. Metagenomics short-chain fatty acid analysis performed structure function microbial communities. These analyses found created response all groups, increased overall SCFA levels, decreased alpha diversity, shifted communities be more similar beta diversity metrics. differed taxa most prevalent or affected by treatment.Overall, results study demonstrate effects on microbiome, importantly, how play role effectiveness prebiotic.
