Since approximately 75% of Europeans currently live in cities, and this number will rise, urban areas are the most important testbeds for energy transition, climate change adaptation measures, decarbonisation models, on which studies efforts concrete must focus. The global increase in renewable energy initiatives has been followed by the need to include social impact of any project as a core element. Significant challenges for development uncertainty assessing impacts at local scales, participation and acceptance. Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approaches have widely used planning address these challenges. This article reviews how criteria mechanisms incorporated into decision-making processes projects. A total 184 articles were analyzed. 490 indicators that estimated identified organized nine criteria: employment, acceptance, development, health impact, governance, visual knowledge awareness, cultural value justice. Most research included analytical hierarchy process methodologies, geographically concentrated Asia Europe. participative component (92.3%), majority them based on expert consultation (75.4%). Of exclusively considered experts, almost 40% did not provide description elicitation process. Results revealed advances use MCDA but highlighted important challenges—related improving methodologies broadening stakeholders—when developing policies.

Measuring the low-carbon energy transition in Chinese cities DOI Creative Commons

Cities' transition from fossil-based systems of energy production and consumption to renewable sources-the transition-is critical mitigating climate change impact as cities' CO2 emissions account for two-thirds over 70% the world's total, respectively. Given heterogeneity, they need specific low-carbon roadmaps instead one-size-fits-all approaches. Here, we used an Energy Transition Index (ETI) characterize city-level transitions system performance readiness dimensions. The ETI scores 282 cities in China revealed a significant heterogeneity across time, gap between top bottom quartiles was persistent. We estimated that China's carbon intensity could decrease by 34% 32%, respectively, per capita fall 17% if each city modestly follows sustainable development path forged best performing with similar economic structures.
